Ear piercing chains require the correct length to sit comfortably between two piercings or looped around a single piercing. Measuring your ear for a helix chain, conch chain, or lobe chain is easy and can be done at home.
This step-by-step guide will show you how to measure the distance between two ear piercings and how to measure the length needed to wrap around a single piercing so you can choose the correct chain length for your jewelry. Accurate measuring ensures the chain drapes properly and sits comfortably on your ear.
Follow the steps below to determine the correct ear chain length in millimeters before purchasing your jewelry.

To measure your ear for a piercing chain you will need: 1)A piece of light-coloured string or thread 2) A marker 3) A ruler with millimeters
Using a flexible string makes it easy to measure the exact distance, including curved areas like the helix or conch without bending the ear (which can lead to improper measurements).
Hold a piece of string around your piercing making sure not to bend the ear. The string should sit where the chain will naturally rest on your ear.
Make sure the string is taut but not stretched too tightly, as this will affect the measurement.
Once the string is in place, use a marker or pinch the string to mark the exact points from the middle of the front of the piercing to the middle of the back of the piercing. Enlist help from a friend or family member for better accuracy.
Lay the marked string flat against a ruler and measure the distance in millimeters (mm).
This number is NOT the chain length you should choose when purchasing your piercing chain. You SHOULD choose a chain length that is about 3mm longer than your measurement. This ensures that you will have a nice drape like the chains pictured on our model. If you are unsure, you can always email us for help or for a custom size.
Align the ruler just under the piercings and measure the distance in millimeters (mm) from the middle of the piercing holes.
This number is NOT the chain length you should choose when purchasing your piercing chain. You SHOULD choose a chain length that is about 5mm longer than your measurement. This ensures that you will have a nice drape like the chains pictured on our model. If you are unsure, you can always email us for help or for a custom size.
Different ear placements require different chain lengths depending on ear anatomy and piercing placement.
Common piercing chain sizes include:
• Helix chains: 18–25mm
• Helix to forward helix chains: 26-38mm
• Helix to lobe chains: 2-3 inches
• Lobe to lobe chains: 26-38mm
• Conch chains: 26-38mm
Every ear is unique, so measuring your ear using the method above ensures you choose the most comfortable and flattering chain length.
